Tata Motors, which accounts for nearly 70 per cent share in this business segment also outlined plans to launch more models on the Prima platform by the middle of next year. The company plans to export these trucks from its manufacturing base in South Korea. The trucks will also be manufactured at a modern, Rs 1,000-crore plant in Jamshedpur, which has the capacity to produce about 50,000 vehicles a year.

Tata Prima tipperVinod K. Sahay, Head of Sales and Marketing, Medium and Heavy Trucks, Tata Motors, said that these trucks, part of the global truck platform, provide higher levels of comfort and help increase productivity.

As the trucks are built on a platform, which is modular, the company can manufacture over 1,000 variants. Sahay further added that the new trucks will complement two models launched earlier and gradually, these products will initially be introduced in the construction-intensive States. Mr Deependra Sharma, Head-Marketing of Medium and Heavy Vehicles, said that Prima trucks also offer the flexibility to customize for certain requirements it in the construction and mining industries.  Sahay said that in research, with Prima trucks, drivers did cover 750 – 800 kms in a day as agains the 400 – 450 km used in older generation trucks.

Tata Motors will commence the distribution of Tata Prima Construck range to select customers in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, West Bengal and Jharkhand. Since operating the new range of trucks needs additional training, Tata Motors will train the driving crew of customers at the Jamshedpur manufacturing facility.  The service network has been made ready to support Tata Prima range and the distribution system for the range is expected to be completed in phases by 2012.

Tata Prima is a giant leap for Tata Motors in the commercial vehicle segment as the competition has increased up after the entry of Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles (VECV) and Tata’s arch rival Ashok Leyland. Tata Motors has brought it technology and overseas market expertise via its Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle Company in South Korea as well as the Tata Motors European Technical center in the UK. Besides, Tata Motors and its partners in Italy, Germany, Sweden, the US, Japan and South Korea have collectively harnessed the best of inputs and technologies – in styling, engines, transmission, suspension, chassis frames, fabrication and dies.

Hindustan Motors launches Veer - the pickup at Rs. 3.30 lakh

Hindustan Motors has launched Veer – the pickup version of the Amby has been announced for the Kolkata market. The vehicle will join other markets in phases. The Veer is a 0.8-tonne (800 kg) small commercial vehicle and will be launched across India by the end of this financial year. The Veer diesel is offered at an inaugural price (for the month of August 2011) of Rs. 3.30 lakh (ex-showroom Kolkata).

The VEER is a spiritual revival of the HM Porter pickup that was sold in the 80′s. It will compete with the likes of the Tata Ace, Mahindra Maxximo, Piaggio’s Truk and Ashok Leyland Dost. HM already has a 1-tonner mini truck called Winner in that segment.

The Veer is built on the tried and tested Ambassador platform, incorporating changes in transmission and suspension systems required for a load carrier. The vehicle is available in both diesel (BS III) and CNG (BS IV) versions and in two models – Veer and Veer LX. “We have honoured our commitment by launching Veer. More new vehicles will follow suit. These will come both from our Uttarpara plant in West Bengal, where we manufacture the iconic Ambassador and other vehicles, and our Chennai facility where we build the Mitsubishi range of vehicles. The time when diesel and CNG buses used to do duty on roads is gone and the next generation of eco-friendly buses are here to take the charge. Volvo, one of the leading premium bus manufacturer, is soon going to bring its new hybrid bus to India’s IT capital, Bangalore.

Volvo 7700 hybrid, unveiled at the 2012 Auto Expo earlier this month, is soon going to hit Bangalore roads and this has been confirmed by Karnataka Transport Minister R.Ashoka. Initially the bus will run on a trial basis for a period of two months after which it could be deployed permanently. It can accommodate 105 persons at once and incurs significantly less running costs.

Volvo 7700 diesel-electric hybrid bus

As per a report, the bus cuts diesel fuel costs by as much as 30 % and being a hybrid you would not have to worry about emissions either. The bus runs on a combination of powertrains, a CRDi diesel motor and an electric motor which could be employed independently or jointly.

The regenerative braking system charges the battery every time brakes are applied while another technology stops the engine when the bus is stationary and restarts it once the vehicle reaches 15-20 kmph eventually saving more fuel.

If you doubt the product’s performance, let me tell you the bus is successfully running in 20 cities of the world and has proved itself by saving up to 37 % fuel consumption and over 50 % emissions under actual operation.

It is an extremely good joint initiative of the Karnataka government and Volvo and I wish this happens in other metropolitans as well.
